Argentine Tango for Beginners – June 2017 Session
Alive Tango is pleased to present a series of beginner tango lessons. No partner or previous experience required!
Classes are held weekly at the Martin Batchelor Gallery in downtown Victoria. Classes are taught in a progressive, four week series, with a curriculum designed to focus on the fundamentals of the dance and to give you the tools you need to dance comfortably in a social dancing environment.
We will be building on the skills developed in our May 2017 session, but if you are a brand new beginner, don’t worry, our team of experienced teachers and assistants will get you caught up to the class!
Classes are held from 7-8 pm, followed by a guided practica from 8-9pm. Students that are enrolled in a four-week session can dance for free at our weekly Tuesday practicas. To register in advance, please email kelly@alivetangovictoria.ca
Although we encourage students to register in advance for a four-week session, drop-ins are welcome, and our team of experienced instructors and assistants will work with you to get you caught up to the class.
Our classes are taught by rotating teams of instructors, with assistance from experienced dancers in our community. In June 2017 our instructors are Kelly Henderson, Robert Creese, Vanessa Winn and Jeannie Kam.
About Our Instructors:
Robert Creese: Robert’s varied athletic background gives him a deep understanding of how people can train their bodies. After 10 years of Ballroom and Latin dancing, along with Ballet, Mime, Tai Chi and Karate, Robert began Argentine Tango in 2000. He has studied with numerous teachers in Canada, the United States and Europe, including Paulo Araujo, Patricio Touceda and Eva Lucero, Fabian Salas, Mario Consiglieri, Metin Yazir, Alex Krebs and Oscar Moyano.
Vanessa Winn: Vanessa has been dancing since childhood, when her family co-founded Victoria’s international folk dancing club. After exploring other dance forms, she was captivated by Argentine tango and its unique blend of improvisation with structure. Having studied and danced in the Northwest and abroad, she appreciates tango’s universal language and its power to embody the music together. Her teaching focuses on the basic technique that is integral to all movements within the dance. Inspired by its music and culture, she is also a DJ at local milongas.
Tracey Peever: As a 20-year meditator, former Certified Anusara Yoga teacher (2002 – 2010), and with a 15-year background in classical ballet, Tracey is a skilled teacher, coach and guide for both leaders and followers in Victoria, BC. She accesses a multi-disciplinary approach to offering tango as an artful call of the soul and a practice of physical precision and kinaesthetic refinement. She most recently taught and performed in Victoria, Salt Spring Island and Nanaimo with Gabriel el Huracan, of Montreal. Tracey is a versatile and intense dancer, at ease in both open and close embrace, but she is in heaven dancing to Golden Age tango music (1935 – 1955), in close embrace. She most appreciates and teaches well-executed simplicity, musicality, warmth and mutuality in partnership.
Kelly Henderson: Argentine tango has been Kelly’s passion ever since she learned the dance over ten years ago in Montreal. Since relocating to Victoria in 2008, Kelly has been active organizer, collaborator, and instructor in Victoria’s tango community. She is a founder and organizer of Alive Tango and can be found at the practica every weekday honing her craft as both a follower and a leader. As an instructor, Kelly’s emphasis is on comfort, connection, and musicality.
